It's been a busy month for us at Engadine Web Services, however we managed to find the time to attend the Australian Moto GP at Phillip Island last weekend.

FILExt  Back to top...

A file name consists of a name plus an extension e.g. a word docment file could have a file name mydocument.doc where the file extension is "doc". Some people have their Windows Explorer set up so that common file extensions are not displayed. I'm not sure this is a good idea as you will never get use to extensions and what they represent.

So what am I alluding to? Have you ever had a file with a file extension that you did not recognise? I have. Well I found a site that provides you will all the information you ever wanted to know about a particular extension.

FILExt is a detailed database of file extensions and programs that use them. FILExt is not a general support site. A search on the database here might very well result in multiple possibilities; it will be up to you to determine which, if any, of these are the program/format you require information about. To help, many of the links on this site will open a new browser window so you have constant reference to the FILExt data.

Review the FILExt site at http://filext.com/index.php

Shoot The Messenger  Back to top...

Are you using Windows NT/2000/XP and do you suffer from those pop-up window messages appearing on your screen telling you that your browser is running slow or just advertising.

Well I have found the answer to getting rid of them forever...

Some background: The Windows "Messenger Service" is being exploited to spray the Internet with unsolicited commercial eMail. The receipt of a single UDP packet can cause a "Messenger Service" dialog to pop-up on the user's screen. It is possible for the sender to "spoof" (falsify) the packet's "Source IP", making these packets impossible to trace back to their origin. If our experience with eMail Spam is any model, we can expect to see a lot more of this in the future.

"Shoot The Messenger" is a 22 kbyte utility gives users immediate control over the Windows Messenger service. Shoot The Messenger allows any Windows NT/2000/XP user to easily stop and disable the unnecessary Messenger Service running in their machines.

Visit the site and download the utility, its free... http://grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger.htm

Download and run our small (22 kbyte) "ShootTheMessenger.exe" utility. It will display the current status of your system's Messenger Service. The button near the bottom of its window will allow you to set the service to whichever state — running or disabled — that you desire.

If, for any reason, you should ever choose to re-enable the Windows Messenger Service, simply re-run ShootTheMessenger to do so.

ShootTheMessenger supports two command line convenience options which can be useful for operation from corporate logon scripts or batch command files:

ShootTheMessenger disable

ShootTheMessenger enable

Google 'saved' Australian hostage  Back to top...

An Australian journalist kidnapped in Iraq was freed after his captors checked the popular internet search engine Google to confirm his identity according to a BBC News Article.

Google is so mainstream now even the terrorists are using it on a regular basis.
