Some of the ongoing problems people are having are associated with their email inbox and virus intrusion into their system. Both are related of course so it's most important that you have the following installed, especially if you have a broadband connection.

  1. Virus protection software.
  2. Firewall software.
  3. Mailbox management software. (refer issue 1)

Remember, never accept an attachment unless you know and trust the sender.

Also be very careful of Spoofed/Forged Emails. Have you ever received an email sent from your own email address (one that you didn't send)?

Welcome to all those who have requested a subscription to our Newsletter; good to have you on board.

Virus Watch  Back to top...

Watch out for this one: (from WebProWorld Forum)

W32/Zafi.b@MM (also known as W32.Erkez.B@mm) is a Medium Risk mass-mailing worm that spreads via email and peer-to-peer applications.

When spreading via email, the worm will both spoof the sender's From address and send itself out in different languages depending on the top level domain of the recipient's email address. For example, if the address ends in .COM, the virus's email body will appear in English. If the address ends in .DE, the email will appear in German.

The worm also attempts to cripple anti-virus and firewall software installed on a user's system by locating and overwriting a user's security software with copies of itself. Furthermore, the worm will attempt to thwart manual detection by terminating key Windows processes.

EarthClock  Back to top...

What is EarthClock? - a clock for your Desktop.

EarthClockEarthClock is a little app that displays a realtime view of the earth, and overlays a clock. That's all! The realtime view is accomplished by downloading images every 10 minutes from Earth and Moon viewer. Earth and Moon viewer is made by John Walker.

So basically, you can watch the earth slowly revolving from a choice of views, and it's a clock too.

What can it do?

Currently, EarthClock can grab both jpeg and gif images (and also png I think) from websites. It is possible (and fairly easy, once you get the hang of it) to add your own views. How would you like an up-to-date view of the weather above your home town? It's possible with EarthClock. Also, if you're the artistic type, you can create your own semitransparent skins to fully customize EarthClock to your liking.

It's free, download it here...

Skype - keep in touch with your family and friends  Back to top...

What is Skype?

Skype is the next phenomenon from the people who brought you KaZaA. Just like KaZaA, Skype uses SkypeP2P (peer-to-peer) technology to connect you to other users – not to share files this time, but to talk and chat with your friends.

The technology is extremely advanced – but super simple to use... You’ll be making free phone calls to your friends in no time!

Features

  • Free unlimited worldwide phone calls to other Skype users
  • Superior sound quality – better than your regular phone
  • Works with all firewall, NAT and routers – nothing to configure!
  • Friends list shows you when your Skype friends are online and ready to talk or chat
  • Super-simple and easy to use
  • Your calls are encrypted “end-to-end” for superior privacy
  • Based on cutting edge peer-to-peer technology developed by the creators of Kazaa and Joltid

This is a great piece of software. I have been using it for some months now keeping in touch with our kids in Adelaide and the South coast of NSW.

All you need is an internet connection, a sound card in your computer and a microphone. You can review their website here...

Why computers sometimes crash  Back to top...

by Dr. Seuss

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,

and the bus is interrupted at a very last resort,

and the access of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,

then the socket packet pocket has an error to report.

Australian Word Map

I came across this interesting site where they are mapping Australian regionalisms - words, phrases or expressions used by particular language groups. It's certainly worth a visit; you can find out what your parents/grandparents meant by some of those words they used! Were you ever threatened with spifflication? I was...

Australian Word MapAustralian Word Map is a co-production between ABC Online and The Macquarie Library Pty. Ltd., publishers of the Macquarie Dictionary. Word Map is a joint project that allows audiences to engage and interact with a rich, interesting and ever-increasing collection of Australian regionalisms - words, phrases and expressions used by particular language communities.

Regional language is of great interest to those who use it and those who record it. By adding Australian regionalisms to their dictionary publications, Macquarie Library will enrich the coverage of Australian English, in all its colour and variety. In turn, audiences will benefit from the recording of Australian English because they will have greater access to the Australian language - a reflection of our cultural identity.

Yahoo Australia users reap e-mail storage bounty

Yahoo Australia has confirmed that the inboxes of local e-mail account holders would be given a 100MB storage boost in line with plans announced for its US customers earlier today (AEST).

That's a lot of storage space when compared to Hotmail, with the advantage that you don't have to access your mailbox at least once every month to keep it active.
